5,700 more Farmers to get Crop Insurance relief soon

5,700 more Farmers to get Crop Insurance relief soon

Rs. 8 crore is likely to be released, says Collector

Another tranche of compensation of about Rs. 8 crore is likely to be released to 5,700 more farmers in the district soon under the crop insurance scheme for the losses sustained by them due to drought like conditions during 2016-17, Collector K.Rajamani has said.
Disclosing this at the Farmers grievances meeting, Mr.Rajamani said 22,777 farmers had insured their crops in an area of about 47,010 acres during 2016-17. Of this, compensation to the extent of Rs. 37.59 crore has been paid to 13,414 farmers so far.
Of the remaining 9,363 farmers, compensation for about 5,700 farmers is expected to be released soon according to information from the Agriculture Department. “Once the money is received, we will credit it to the farmers’accounts immediately,”he said and hoped that the rest of the 3600 odd farmers too will get the compensation soon.
During the current year, about 29,067 farmers have insured their samba paddy crop. However, not many farmers raising other crops have opted for crop insurance.
“So far only 120 farmers, who are raising other crops, have opted for the insurance. The last date for payment of premium for non-paddy crops is February 28 and farmers raising other crops too should go for insurance,”he said.
On disbursement of crop loans by cooperative institutions, Mr.Rajamani said Rs. 160 crore has been disbursed as crop loans so far by the cooperative societies out of the target of Rs. 276 crore for the year. “I am told there are applications pending for sanction of another Rs. 5 crore. I have requested the Department to monitor the situation closely and divert unutilised funds to societies where there is demand from farmers,” he said.
In response to the demand for opening Director Purchase Centres (DPCs) to procure paddy from farmers, Mr.Rajamani said the DPCs could be opened by next week and new centres would be opened depending on requirement.
Responding to a complaint, Collector K.Rajamani said the no ordinary bus service would be allowed to be converted into LSS (Limited Stop Service) to collect a higher fare in the district.
